℗ 2020 Reprise Records
This will be the first Deftones release I will not purchase. I regret purchasing Saturday Night Wrist and Gore. After the self titled release by Deftones all other releases are weak with exception of a handful of songs. I was hoping for something heavier and thicker in sound. I agree with another review that this is just part two of Gore.
Deftones are such a dependable band and you always know what you’re getting with Deftones: A quiet but slightly menacing buildup of sound paired with Chino Moreno’s dreamy singing which then explodes into a groovy and aggressive racket. The soft/loud dynamic of their sound always appealed to me because it gives their music contrast and a trancelike quality — it’s contemplative, zone-out music but at the same time, you can rock the house down at deafening volume while enjoying a few cold ones. Lastly, Moreno still has it! The way he effortlessly switches from gentle croon to screaming and wailing like a caged animal is still mesmerizing after all these years. Ohms delivers and then some.
While the engineering sounds more like an early band album. It only adds to the uniqueness with how many years Deftones has been rolling on. Similar in style to Gore, Ohms seems to take a lot of influence from Adrenaline. I've listened to the album for multiple weeks while working out and Ohms adds the perfect amount of rythym, drive, and inspiration to get me to several new personal records. Radiant City a song I initially disliked had an invogorating response during a run that recalled memories of late 90s hard rock/alternative culture. There is also a very interesting clash between the melancholy drone of certain songs and the sudden hopeful crescendo of the chorus. I can understand why certain people wouldn't like it, music is subjective. I love it.
This i s not a good album at all, and I used to love Tones but Gore was really disspointing and this just continues the thrend. The voacals are forgettable and at points grading & the lyris are repetative and kinda silly. Abe is whatever on this, Sergio did ok. The biggest let down is Stephs 9 string crap. Every riff is the same tempo, same 3 notes etc. Its obvious there not the same band and it happens. The only good song is ohms.
Bought it. Listened to a few songs while on the go and wasn’t terribly impressed. Then eventually I sat myself down, focused and listened to the whole thing...I friggin just love this MASTERPIECE!!! I think it’s beauteous. It’s got a crazy vibe. It’s been a jacked up year and it’s just what I needed. About 22 years ago I walked into a record store, looking for something new. On a total whim (I liked the album covers) I decided to pick up Adrenaline and Around the Fur ...I’ve been in love ever since. You’re my favorite all time band. Lastly, APPLE DIGITAL MASTER SQ is fantastic!
I'm just going to say I'm very impressed with this album. Unfortunately I didn't get into them until White Pony. My musical taste and understanding have grown over the years. I have come to realize that musicans change......adapt. I have absolutely loved their transitions and can relate to their changes. They wouldn't be artists if they keep repeating the same material. I'm not saying that I can relate to their music but the key is to try to understand their change and try to understand what they are feeling. They are one of the bands that if you catch their live show, their energy is unreal! You can feel the emotion, you feel the energy. That's what I have grown to love about music. It's an art. It's all about interpretation. I love this album and haven't put it down since I purchased it. Radiant City is definately my favorite track. Keep up the good work gentleman! Hope to see you guys on tour!!!
This is the best deftones album since Saturday night wrist. I’m definitely getting white pony vibes. This album is beautifully dark+skater punk+mysterious. It’s kind of like a better version of diamond eyes.
Great album and grooves. I love the simplicity of this album and the effectiveness of the music. There are a lot of special moments in these songs where the music hits just right and would sound great live. Must buy.
Deftones is one of my favorite bands, and while this album took a few listens for it to click for me, I believe it’s easily one of their best and most concise! Personally I think this is their best since SNW. Favorite tracks: Pompeji, Ceremony, Spell of Mathematics
I LOVE DEFTONES! This album wasn’t what I thought it would be because I heard rumors that it sounded like around the fur and white pony. When the album dropped I listened to the entire album and was disappointed. Fast foreword to today and now I’m loving this album. I guess I just had to get rid of my expectations of what I thought the album would be and let it be what it is which is really a great album in its entirely. Please guys, don’t break up and chino keep doing your side projects!
If you like their harder sound you will not like this album. Long time fan, and when I listen to a Deftones album I want to hear songs like Bored, Around the Fur, Elite, etc. This is an album you play in the background before you go to sleep. It really belongs under his side project Team Sleep if you ask me...
Praetoreon with his review is a fkng idiot ! You can’t expect the band to write the same album 8 x’s . Adrenaline was amazing, as well as around the fur . But , they are different in their own beauty. Thought they couldn’t write the same way as Deftones self titled, and couldn’t move forward from that vein of groove and aggression and heart . Metallica couldn’t write and justice for all for the next album , because that record was recorded . Saying your disappointed in Deftones at all pisses me off , and your should just quit listening to them . Great album , epic songs
What a turn for me with this album. Like at least one other viewer, when I first skimmed through this on iTunes, at not very high album, I said, "Meh." After a few more listens, I find myself endlessly looping this album. Very similar progression that I had with Tool's Fear Inoculum album. This album gets better with each listen. It reintroduces some raw riffage not heard since Adrenaline, combined with ATF's power and heaviness, and the ethereal beauty of White Pony - basically the best of their best three albums, in one. Best tracks for me are Error and Urantia, followed closely by Genesis, Spell of Mathematics, while Ceremony and This Link is Dead are fast growing on me. Lifelong roadie fan here says buy the whole thing, you won't be sorry. Strong work Deftones!
Amazing record from an amazing group of individuals, together that form “Deftones”. This is a beautiful compilation of music that can be listened from start to finish, no skipping needed. Chino never disappoints me...and Stephan gets his part in Ohms... this album is a gem, and a must have for any fan of this band. If I could give it 10 stars I would. 1 love for Chi.
DEFTONES ARE BACK! Chino on point with the melodic vocals, Abe’s drumming 👍 Stephens crazy guitar rifs! RIP CHI CHENG! I know he’s be proud of this.... WE NEED ANOTHER “AROUND THE FUR” type album please!
Everyone wants to be a critic now days but as an AVID listener to that sweet Deftones sound this is another album that soothes my Soul. Each an every album has its differences but just as we as people we all are unique so as for me no matter what they put out I’m happy and surely already look forward to the next one as I enjoy this one allday everyday.
